PREVIEW

5.0-5.5 Expert Division

Big things are happening in the Expert division! California power ranked #4 Trevor Barbosa from Shifty, who is also ranked 19th in the Open Division for STS will be joining forces with Matt Ortlip, who is California power ranked #5 and from Fibonacci Roundnet in the open division. This team will have a deep arsenal of serves, and will be getting touches on most anything you try to put away. We expect them to be in the finals and win the whole thing. Thomas Nishimoto agrees and states, “Trevor and Matt will not drop a game and none of their games will go to extras. Clear cut favorite IMO”. Matt has other thoughts “Whichever team plays the cleanest will come away with 1st”. Trevor and Matt will be taking the 1 seed in the division with 1925 Points. Trailing behind them with 1300 points are California Elite player Nate Schrag and GCU/Cali player Ryan McCarger. They are here to show everyone that after their dominance in norcal, that they can hang with all the socal locals. “Ryan and I are extremely excited to be competing this weekend not only for the CASR points but to help us become as solidified as some California Spikeball household names.” This team is fighting 2 other teams for that finals spot, and they “are most excited for Texas Sucks (Andrew Kosche and Dean Wasil) because of a long running bet between Andrew and Ryan that if Ryan beats Andrew in a series, Andrew owes Ryan $100 and I know this is the tournament to do it in. Watchout for the Electro monkey's baby.” Clearly this will be an exciting match to watch and one for the ages. Another team in the running is CA #9 Jacob Martinez a California OG and comeup player Ethan Zehr. With Ethan firing serves left and right and maybe in reverse and the added  goon strength of the #1 Women’s roundnet player Jacob Martinez, this team may find themselves in 1st place. Ethan says “he is excited to play Trevor and Matt cause they are cool guys and I need to learn serve receive better.” Another team looking to making the podium CA ranked#7  Ryan Oswalt and CA Ranked #12 Josh fragiacomo may have an interesting run if Josh's body can keep up.

2.0-4.5 Women’s Division

California Women's Roundnet has always had a strong 4, but nowadays we see a lot more women players growing their skills and competing at the top level. We are always excited to see a women's division in California because we always know it's going to be a fight. The front runners include CA power ranked #6 Perrin York from Spice Rack and CA power ranked #7 Ashley Ortlip. These two women have shown they can play against the top women's players, but even though they find themselves at #1 doesn’t mean the runners up can’t pull off a win. Ashley says she’s “really excited to play against Seb and Mey, I know they both play really well and it will be a tough mashup.” Seb and Mey are definitely the veteran team and may have the experience to pull off the win. Seb competed in our last women's division in San Diego and played with Perrin York but now she’s her top competitor and she knows it. “in womens I’m excited to play Perrin and Ashley. I think our games against them will be extremely fun and competitive”. Perrin is also excited about their match up and says “I'm always nervous playing my season partner, she has a lot of strong attributes about her game, but the key to winning women’s is to minimize mistakes and focus on getting the ball in the net.” We will see if one of these teams can take home the win. Let’s not forget about Trojan alumni Malia Sato and Christine Chang from $$KA-CHING$$. These two women are new to the roundnet scene but have developed their skills to compete with these top women's players and could very well sneak their way into the finals. These Trojan alumni are “excited to play with each other and always love competing in a women's division, we want a lot of rallies and to have fun. Dark horse Stacey Grimes, who finished 4th in our women's division in her hometown San Diego and Tung Lin from UCLA are also looking to have a good performance this tourney.

2.0-5.0 Coed Division(Sunday 8/28)

Coed is always a great time full of rallies and great competition, but it's also a brawl. Most of the time there isn’t an obvious 1st place pick. For this tourney, we can break it down into 6 top teams. There are two teams in particular that have a high chance of making it into the finals. Trevor Barbosa and Joelle Nguyen will be a difficult team to take down with Nguyen having two great Coed finishes at the STS OC and STS Utah Challengers and Trevor who can hold his own against the top of California. Coming up on their shoulders is Karah Hui from Kickstart who is one of four women's players competing in the Coed Championship on ESPN and Ethan Zehr who has been building experience against the top California players, hopefully that will be enough against the powerhouse of Barbosa and Nguyen.

These next 2 teams are definitely going to be making the most jokes and best plays of the day but will it be enough to get them into the finals. CA power ranked #11 Jacob Payer from Psych Roundnet is teaming up with CA #6 Perrin York from Spice Rack. This team could easily find themselves in the semis. The team that will be getting in your mental zone all day with their crazy antics and deceivingly gnarly serves is CA power ranked #9 Jacob Martinez and CA power ranked #11 Sebastiani Kim. Kim says that her “favorite part about coed is seeing all the fun mashups with a wide range in skill level.”

The bottom 2 teams that have the potential to make the top 4 are all fairly new players besides one OG. OG player Schon Siguenza has been raiding the STS scene and is growing in his skills as a serveballer. He is teaming up with CA power rank #14 Kayla Ngai from $$KA-CHING$$. This team will be making defensive plays all day and will have a sick highlight video. The next team that will come off firing is Cal Poly's Luke Pennington and CA power ranked #15 Christine Chang from $$KA-CHING$$. This team will have a collective of aces and rallies. Maybe if they play their cards right they can find themselves in the top 4.

With an interesting last minute sign up from Ryan Oswalt and CA ranked #2 Kayla wu they will make this division a lot more interesting and definitely a more competitive division.
